This is the best explanation anyone has given me of what has been going on this week, and contributes to my personal "robes" debate.

As an 'about to be' Reader/Lay Minister (whose done mum/slob/dungarees/professional feminine and would have loved to have been a rock chick, and do own the leathers) my vicar is discouraging robes which is fine as I don't need them to 'let' me preach. Yet my liberal high placement parish gave me a feel for them I was comfortable with (emotionally, not physically) and the congregation 'needed' to relate to me as a minister.

If the traditional congregations need it, should we still wear robes for them, or do we not wear robes to "attract" those outside/dipping their toe in those congregations that we want to draw into a relationship with God?
