theology joke
Roger sent me this joke. It completely cracked me up:
And Jesus said unto them, "And whom do you say that I am?"
They replied,
"You are the totaliter aliter, the vestigious trinitatum who speaks to us in the modality of Christo-monism.”
" You are the impossible possibility who brings to us, your children of light and children of darkness, the overwhelming roughness’ in the midst of our fraught condition of estrangement and brokenness in the contiguity and existential anxieties of our ontological relationships.
"You are he who heals our ambiguities and overcomes the split of angst and existential estrangement; you are he who speaks of the theonomous viewpoint of the analogia entis, the analogy of our being and the ground of all possibilities.
"You are my Oppressed One, my soul's shalom, the One who was, who is, and who shall be, who has never left us alone in the struggle, the event of liberation in the lives of the oppressed struggling for freedom, and whose blackness is both literal and symbolic.”
And Jesus replied, "Huh?"
Oh that's the right start to my day! Thank you, Maggi!

Shouldn't it be "WHO do you say that I am?"? He was without sin after all.

He must have been in our church on Sunday - soooo much jargon. There was one song I couldn't sing because it such was a jumble of religious phrases that made no sense. It was like someone had cut up the lines of a psalm and then rearranged them and put them to music without any editing. And they wonder why no one wants to go to church.

This is a contemporary redaction of an ancient text. The ur-joke, much less prolix (cf. Matthean and Lucan expansions of Mark), goes back at least to the early seventies, when "they answered: 'You are the eschatological manifestation of the ground of our being, the mystical essence of the divine kerygma.'" And our Lord's response was "Wot?", not "Huh?" There is a lesson about the nature of tradition here somewhere!

Maggie, I liked that - it made me laugh a lot....but then I thought....we do like our high falutin' words, don't we? At the expense of ruining the joke....do you think that's because some think God is impressed by making what is simple complex, or those that use such words are spiritually insecure?

I think we still get phazed by not being able to articulate something as clearly as maybe we intuitively grasp it internally.
I think there's a difference between feeling God's presense in your heart, and your head being able to express it... And this difference throws people sometimes maybe?
This was a new joke to me and I loved it!
My fave Jesus joke is -
Jesus was at a charity football match between a team from the local Angclican church and a team from the local Roman Catholic Church. He was having a great time and really enjoying watching the football - and then the RC team scored! Jesus was really excited and jumped up cheering. Then not long later, the Angclican team scored!
Jesus went mad - jumping, shouting, cheering.
The man next to him, puzzled, turned to him and asked - "So just which side are you on then?" Jesus explained that he wasn't on any side, he was just really enjoying the game.
The man turned to his friend and said - 'That's all we need. Another b***** athiest!'

Even if it is a re-cycled joke that I remember it still made me laugh. Even stranger it made me think about what Jesus would say about the current "debate" about atonement; after all He left no theories or theology just a meal to be shared by all who believe.

I loved the joke too - it will probably appear on my blog one day soon
but I also have to admit to being one of those who might use 'high falutin' words (and lots too) - I'm verbose, I can't help it. I don't think I'm spiritually insecure - it's just my default setting. I do actively try to speak normally tho' cos I kno' it annoys people :-)
