Daily Office

I have noted various requests via e-mail, comments, etc., that further to my Greenbelt talk, Rhythm of the Saints, I post more on the development of monastic/cathedral traditions in liturgy, and on the Daily Office. No time to post any more this this week, sorry... I'm writing all day at the moment with 2 book scripts to complete in the next little while.

But 2 recommendations for an Office book would be (for the beginner) "The Little Office Book" by Angela Tilby - very easy to follow, doesn't take long to say each office. If you already know your way around prayer books of one sort or antoher, or are willing to spend a couple of hours working out how to do it, the Benedictine Office is lovely.

For readings, Mark Berry is doing good stuff over at SafeSpace, actually posting sets of lectionary readings (which, in order ot say the office, you need to use in conjunction iwth an Office book of some sort.

And meantime here's a lovely story about how the daily habit of the Office can change your whole way of thinking...  Storyteller’s World - A Candle in the Sunlight.

Hi Maggi
I am getting more spiritual direction requests at the moment about using The Daily Office and have just offered the first of a number for posts, and tidied my categories so that people can easily access previous posts on the topic. What is really exciting is that it transcends all denominational- theological boundaries, and what is interesting is how new technology is reviving the tradition in a way that the printed press never really managed among lay people. The Ipod selection is great as well you only have to look at my top 10 on the site to realise a shared love of Paul Simon and Craig Armstrong.
Tom

thanks, Tom! I'm also woefully tempted by your Epiphone recommendation...
