venting my spleen

I was trying to describe last night how it feels when someone gives you that "look" that clearly says you have not come up to the mark; that you are not quite the right-on Christian they thought you were. And, bizarrely how that "look" can make you want to start justifying yourself despite the fact that you know that it wouldnt' matter what you said, they would still treat you with suspicion...

"When you get that "look" it makes you feel like... like..." I spluttered,  - and then I lost the flow and started mixing my metaphors... "like the sperm of beelzebub. No, that's not it. I mean the spawn of the devil. No, that's not right either..."

When words fail you, make up some new ones. That's a trick I learned from Coleridge

... "like the Spleen of Bandicoot!" I finished triumphantly.

If the enthusiasm round the table was anything to go by (and it probably wasn't) this phrase could soon be in the OED. Remember, you heard it here first.

Oh Maggi...I do LOVE you....
The Spleen of Bandicoot is in fact a member of our PCC...but we're seeking advice...

This expresses perfectly the emotion felt by the various members of my family who complain of "extreme bandicootion", usually occasioned by yet another of my absences in church.....

ROFL

You are an amazing woman of God :)

I thought The Spleen of Bandicot was the title of some Scottish noble, but the Look always makes me feel like the publican in Jesus description of the two men in the temple.
